Cancan is a French dance. The term refers to the noise produced by the steps of the dance itself. While in England it shocked the population, which eventually condemned it as “indecent”, in France, it could not stop spreading. Initially, it was danced in pairs, which followed their own creativity, lifting their legs as high as they could. The women fluttered their mantles, embellished with lace and colourful stripes, what used to please the audience considerably.
Cancan was considered a frenzied rhythm, of counterbalance and flexibility, with extremely sensual steps and fascinating acrobatics and outfit. |
